Overview:
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck teaches you to examine what you really care about and don’t care about. Mark Manson explains we only have so many fucks to give in our life and we have to choose where to spend them. Not everything is worthy of our fucks.
Don’t Try
The first chapter is titled “Don’t Try.” The premise of this chapter (and the book) is similar to a piece of advice my dad likes to tell me, which is, “Sometimes you have to throw your hands up and say fuck it!”
If you’re drawn to this book, you’ll know that that is easier said than done…
This book teaches you how to throw your hands up and say fuck it. It reminds you that you can let go and everything will be ok. Hell, it will probably turn out better than ok! Manson refers to this as the Backwards Law (11). But you have to give less fucks first. Weirdly, things have ALWAYS worked out better for me whenever I’ve been able to throw my hands up.
Conclusion
The Subtle Art is a quick, easy, and enjoyable read. It’s funny, honest, and takes a completely different approach than most self-help books. This book encourages you to say “fuck it” and helps you feel good about doing it.
